PayPay Balance Card
To enable users to use their PayPay balance for online shopping, I led the design of the virtual prepaid card — the PayPay Balance Card. From the initial concept phase, I collaborated closely with multiple stakeholders, including the CEO, throughout this large-scale, year-long project. As the lead designer, I was responsible for the overall experience design, screen architecture, and final visual delivery.

PayPay has established itself as an essential part of Japan’s payment infrastructure, especially for offline shopping at physical stores. However, its presence in online transactions has remained relatively small. The number of online services that allow users to pay with their PayPay balance is limited, creating challenges both for users and for the business itself.

Although the card is virtual, we carefully designed its appearance to make the prepaid nature of the service intuitive and easy to understand. To distinguish it from existing credit cards and ensure instant recognition as PayPay balance, we finalized the design in PayPay’s signature red.

Many Edge Cases
There were numerous complex edge cases to handle, including temporary overdraft statuses that occur when credit transactions cause a negative or insufficient balance. We meticulously mapped out display conditions across all PayPay screens to ensure consistency and prevent user confusion.
